Help mend broken spirits

You can help give an abused elephant a better life today

Elephants are highly intelligent animals. Capable of complex thought, they express the same deep emotion as humans – love, joy, anger and grief.

It’s sad to say, but elephants raised in captivity will never experience these joys. Instead, they live their rich emotional lives suffering with intense grief, fear and emotional and physical trauma.

Whether taken from the wild or bred in captivity, the process of ‘taming’ young elephants involves years of isolation, starvation and physical torture. Usually stolen from their mothers as babies, this cruel process is designed to break the elephant’s spirit, making them easier to handle.

Captivity can never meet an elephant’s needs. And no elephant can be trained humanely to perform circus tricks or give rides. But tragically, elephants like Mae Kham are still suffering in the entertainment industry.

In Asia, insufficient animal welfare regulations and unregulated working hours have created a profitable animal tourism industry where elephants and other wild animals are abused and exploited.

That’s why together, we are working with governments, travel companies and venue owners to protect elephants and other abused animals in the entertainment industry.

You can help provide elephants like Mae Kham trapped in the entertainment industry with the safe home they deserve.

Your generous gift could help:

  • build a new socialisation area at the Mandalao Elephant Sanctuary in Northern Laos, so that elephants are able to roam freely.
  • continue to fund sanctuaries to protect abused elephants
  • continue our campaign to keep animals in the wild, and work with governments, travel companies and local communities to strengthen animal protection policies.

Thank you for all you do to move the world to protect animals.

* Your donation will help protect animals around the world

Where your money goes

World Animal Protection has been protecting animals for over 50 years and we passionately believe that animals matter. With your support, we’ll go where animal suffering is most far reaching and animal cruelty is most severe.

In 2017, 87% of funds raised went towards protecting animals in our four areas of work. We strive to ensure your vital donations make the largest impact for animals and help achieve lasting change.
