You can help give suffering bears lives worth living

Help feed and heal rescued bears at Libearty sanctuary

Earlier this year, a two-year-old brown bear entered a Romanian town to search the bins for food. But while crossing the road, she was hit by a car. The driver didn’t stop and this young bear was abandoned and left for dead.

Her leg was badly broken and she needed immediate help. Her life hung in the balance.

Thanks to people like you, the Millions of Friends Association (AMP) was able to arrive at the scene. They named her Anima, which in Latin, means “breath of life”.

She was sedated and taken to the Libearty Bear Sanctuary, to begin the urgent care she desperately needed to get back on her paws.

Without people like you, our partner AMP, and the Libearty Bear Sanctuary, she would have died by the side of the road.

Anima is one of over 100 bears to be rescued by AMP from captivity, poor conditions, or certain death, and rehabilitated at Libearty.

But life can still be difficult.  Sadly, at the sanctuary, many bears are unable to hibernate. Many bears who have spent most of their life in captivity have never had the freedom or the ability to look after themselves and do not know how.

Libearty Bear Sanctuary is located at Zarnesti, high up in the Carpathian Mountains where the Romanian winters can be extremely harsh. Temperatures drop to as low as –29°C and the snow can fall hard and fast for up to five months.

In the months leading up to winter, AMP staff prepare by providing larger portions of food to all the bears so that they can put on the essential extra fat that they need to keep warm in the freezing temperatures. This includes fruit, vegetables, meat, yoghurt, dry food specially made for the bears and, as a special treat, honey.

Rescued bears like Anima urgently need a constant supply of nutritious food if they are to survive the harsh winter. It’s a matter of life and death.

Your kind gift today could help:

  • ensure that any bears kept in sub-par conditions or enclosures, whether privately or in run-down zoos, are cared for properly in high welfare environments, such as Libearty sanctuary;
  • ensure that we can continue our campaign to enforce the law and ensure no bears in Romania are kept privately and/or in poor conditions;
  • ensure that we can continue to help fund and advise AMP and the sanctuary throughout the harsh winter.

Please donate today and help ensure bears like Anima have lives worth living.
